Christopher Rex
Principal Cello, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Christopher Rex joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as Principal Cello in 1979, the same year he became the first cellist to win the string prize in the biennial Young Artists Competition of the National Federation of Music Clubs. He has appeared as a recitalist and chamber musician across the nation. In the summer of 1988, he shared Acting Principal Duties for the New York Philharmonic’s European tour, replacing Lorne Munrow. Following his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music with Orlando Cole, and the Juilliard School with Leonard Rose, Mr. Rex joined the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy. He is a founding member of the Georgian Chamber Players, whose concert series in Atlanta has welcomed many renowned musicians.

In May 1994 Christopher Rex, together with his brother Charles Rex, premiered a double concerto for violin, cello and orchestra by Stephan Paulus to sold-out audiences at four concerts in Lincoln Center with Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic. In February 2001, Christopher and Charles Rex presented a program in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall as a tribute to their father, Charles Gordon Rex, Sr. Only music composed by Mr. Rex, Sr. was performed.

In addition to his professional obligations, Christopher Rex finds time to pursue his longtime interest in visual arts. He has produced many fine drawings and watercolors and is exploring a recent interest in graphic design.

Mr. Rex returns to the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival as Artistic Director, as a featured performer, and sits on the Board of Directors as a founding member of the festival.
